SMF in 5G Network

SMF stands for "Session Management Function". It is a key component of the 5G core network architecture.

It establishes, maintains, and releases user sessions in the 5G network. And it coordinates the allocation, modification, and release of IP addresses and other session parameters for user equipment (UEs).

The SMF selects the appropriate User Plane Function (UPF) to handle the user's data session.
And it configures the UPF to apply the necessary Quality of Service (QoS) parameters, and traffic handling policies, such as packet routing, traffic detection, and usage monitoring.
