Mobility Management states in 3G
The mobility Management states in 3G are called the 'PMM states'.
The PMM state is having three different values, which describes the state of the UE from Mobility Management prospective as shown below,
PMM-CONNECTED state
In PMM-CONNECTED state, the network knows the UE exists in which location to the most accurate level, which is the cell level.
In addition, the packets can be sent and received between the UE, and the SGSN.
The UE enters to PMM-CONNECTED state when it makes the 'Attach procedure'.
PMM-IDLE state
In PMM-IDLE state, the network knows the location of the UE only to the RA level. it doesn't know the UE exists under which cell in this RA.
In addition, no packets can be transferred between UE, and the SGSN.
The control plane connection between the SGSN and the UE is called the 'PS signaling connection'.
when this connection is broken for a problem, or because the SGSN released it to save network resources, the network will move the UE to PMM-IDLE state.
PMM-DETACHED state
In PMM-DETACHED state, the network doesn't know about the existence of the UE.
The UE moves to PMM-DETACHED state when it makes a 'Detach procedure'.
Or when, the attach procedure, or the RAU procedure, of the UE, is rejected.
