EPS Fallback in 5G Network

EPS Fallback, is a mechanism used in early deployment stages of 5G network, when the 5G network is still not ready to handle voice and video calls of the UEs.

EPS Fallback allows the 5G network to move the UE to the 4G network, in case this UE needs to initiate or receive a voice or a video call.

When a 5G UE initiates or receives a call while connected to the 5G network, the 5G network will fallback this UE to the 4G network, in order to initiate or receive this call through the 4G network.

    VoLTE (Voice over LTE) Introduction

While the UE attached to LTE network, the UE can initiate, or receive a voice or a video call. The UE achieves this, by connecting to an external network, which is the 'IMS' network. We can call this, Voice over LTE (VoLTE). This is exactly like when you would like to create a call, while…

What is an ‘EPS Bearer’ in LTE ?

During 'LTE attach' procedure, the network establishes this EPS Bearer between the UE and the PGW. The PGW assigns an IP address for this Bearer. The UE uses this IP address, in order to communicate with the PDN. In addition, the PGW assigns a QoS for this Bearer, which guarantees the QoS for the data…

QoS ‘Quality of Service’ in GPRS

QoS refers to 'Quality of Service'. After 'PDP context activation' procedure completes, a 'PDP context' shall exist on the MS, the SGSN, and the GGSN. In addition, the GGSN assigns a QoS for this 'PDP context'. This QoS describes the priority that the nodes shall give to traffic belonging to this 'PDP context'. The subscription…
